Not many people know that there are ways to arrange cut flowers to ensure they stay fresh for longer and look really good. Often, however, the manner in which you arrange your fresh flowers will determine the length of their blooming period. First and foremost, make sure you have a large enough vase ready and full of water when you open your flowers. Cut off all the leaves that will be underwater to remove the bacteria that can clog up the stems and prevent water uptake.
Your vase should be around two-thirds full, and the water should be lukewarm, since this will make buds bloom. Be careful when you unwrap the flowers, and handle them gently to prevent buds and leaves falling off. Never arrange cut flowers in chilly water. Cold water shortens your flowers’ lifespan, and you should avoid metal or aluminium vases. A glass vase is best for keeping your flowers fresh for longer. Make sure you locate your vase of fresh flowers in a cool area away from heat, direct sunlight and draughts.
Trimming your flowers’ stems increases their surface area and allows them to take up more water. This should be done at a 45-degree angle about one inch above the end of the stems. Use a sharp knife to do this, not scissors, which squeeze the stem and cause damage. Remember to feed your cut flowers with the special food sachet Interflora sends with them, and keep the floristry foam moist with daily top ups.
